Firefighter of the Year October 14, 2004

On Wednesday, October 13, 2004 the Sertoma Club of Lincoln presented LFR Fire Captain Pat Borer with Firefighter of the Year.

Fire Captain Pat Borer was nominated for the tremendous effort he has shown in his work and dedication to the citizens of Lincoln for the past 16 years. He is always positive and a great example for others to follow. Captain Borer always has a smile to share. He can be relied upon to get the job done. Pat has dedicated himself to assisting Lincoln Fire & Rescue with additional assignments and responsibilities. As a Firefighter Pat was involved in not only fire suppression but was also active in the LFR Fitness Program, Dive Rescue team, the Hazardous Materials team, and was responsible for all repairs and maintenance of our fire suppression protective clothing to help keep our firefighters safe.

He has taken the time to sew, mend, repair, and make sure the firefighters gear is in the best condition possible. Pat has also assisted Southeast Community College Fire Protection Program as a lead instructor and mentor with the Fire Officer Training program. Captain Borer is recognized by his peers and supervisors as a role model employee. He will go beyond what is asked of him, and is always trying to improve the quality of life in our community.

Currently Pat is assigned to the LFR Training Division as the lead instructor and is responsible for the delivery and development of incident command operations, employee professional development, and the dive rescue team. Pat is always looking for ways to improve his skills and knowledge to better prepare our firefighters and himself. To accomplish this, he is now enrolled in the “National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program: located in Emmitsburg, MD. The program is a four year commitment funded by the United States Fire Administration and designed to provide fire chiefs and fire officers with an opportunity to research and network with others in similar positions on a national level. This networking and research will allow him to better prepare himself to face the fire service challenges of today.

Captain Pat Borer has received numerous awards, some of which include: the 1,000 point club, Certificate of Commendation, Certificate of Excellence, Unit Performance Awards, Swift Water Rescue, Outstanding Firefighter Awards, and te prestigious Phoenix Award. Captain Borer is also a member of the Nebraska Task Force (NETF1) Urban Search and Rescue Team. His position of the team is Safety Officer.

During emergency operations, Pat can be relied on effectively to protect the safety of the citizens and fire department personnel. He has attended numerous training programs and continuing education opportunities, to ensure that he possesses up to date fire service knowledge.

“Above and Beyond the Call” is a familiar phrase to the men and women of LFR. We feel that Captain Borer exemplifies that philosophy in total community service.
