Mayor Chris Beutler
Accomplishments
May 14 - Dec. 31, 2007

  • Making government more efficient and effective and restoring confidence in City government: To change the culture at City Hall, Mayor Beutler is asking the tough questions, demanding accountability and instilling a more customer-focused attitude.
  • Mayor Beutler created the City Audit Advisory Board to look at how City government operates and how we can do it better.
  • Mayor Beutler fulfilled a campaign promise to find permanent solutions to a budget that is not keeping pace with our revenues. In the first year, the Mayor eliminated 63 jobs and re-structured departments to make them more efficient.
  • The City’s new Fire Chief is using his experience and leadership skills to provide excellent service and create positive changes in the department. Efforts to control costs and other necessary changes have helped to the EMS fund finish the fiscal year in the black.

Promoting economic development:

  • The Beutler Administration has taken steps toward creating a Development Services Center to eliminate red tape and make the development process smoother and less costly to those who are trying to create job growth in our community.
  • The Mayor’s Opportunities for a Vibrant Economy or MOVE Council has been established to look at the City’s economic development possibilities. This group of citizens from various interest groups across the City has already provided sound advice on tax increment financing, development at 48th and “O” streets and other issues.
  • Mayor Beutler has appointed key leaders in Urban Development, Economic Development and Public Works and Utilities to build partnerships for economic growth.

Working together:

  • The City is working with UNL, the University of Nebraska Foundation and private partners on plans for a new indoor ice center.
  • The Mayor has continued to work as partners with others in the community to advance the Antelope Valley Project, the University’s proposed Innovation Park, the proposal for a new arena and a State legislative agenda that includes financing for road projects.
  • The Mayor has strengthened the City’s partnerships with the Lincoln Public Schools by preserving School Resource Officers in the middle and high schools; creating a community-use gym for the future Arnold Elementary; and moving forward with plans to pave Alvo Road between two future schools in north Lincoln.
