Mayor Don Wesely today presented the Mayor’s Community Conscience Award for 2001 to Ameritas Life Insurance Corp. The award was created a year ago to honor a local business for its participation in meeting the human service needs of the city. The award was presented at an awards breakfast this morning at Wells Fargo.
"Ameritas and its employees have not only made significant financial contributions to Lincoln, they are also active participants in the leadership that is moving our community forward," said Mayor Wesely. "Ameritas is represented on many non-profit boards and in many volunteer activities that are the heart and soul of a caring community."
Accepting the award for Ameritas was Larry Arth, Chairman of the Board and CEO. Ameritas was founded in Lincoln in 1887 as Bankers Life Nebraska and now employs about 950 associates at its home office in Lincoln.
The award winner was chosen by a select committee of business people. Last year’s award winner was Pfizer Animal Health. The featured speaker at this morning’s awards breakfast was Jerr Boschee of the National Center for Social Entrepreneurs. The breakfast was taped by 5 CITY-TV and will run on cable channel 5, the government access channel.
