Mayor Proclaims October 24 as United Nations Day
Global health is theme for this year

Mayor Don Wesely today proclaimed October 24, 2001 as United Nations Day in Lincoln. The United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA), in cooperation with other organizations, has declared global health as its theme for this year’s commemorations. The Mayor appointed Bruce Dart, Director of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD),as the Chair for United Nations Day in Lincoln.

"The U.N. Millennium Declaration established goals of reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases and reducing maternal and child mortality," said Mayor Wesely. "These are the kinds of issues our Health Department is working on every day in our community."

"Whether a community looks at physical, mental or environmental health, there are always links between global health issues and local health concerns," said Dart. Some examples:

Dart said the recent outbreak of cryptosporidious is an example of an infectious disease threat in our community. Since August 24, when the first cases of the "crypto" were reported, 157 cases of the gastrointestinal illness have been identified.
