Mayor Wesely's Statement on Additional Jobs
at Burlington Northern-Santa Fe

"Today's news that the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) will transfer up to 100 jobs this spring to the Havelock facility in northeast Lincoln is very welcome. The company is consolidating its freight car repair operations by moving the jobs to Lincoln from Topeka, Kansas. These are positions with good salaries, and BNSF has training opportunities available.

"In addition, BNSF has already added eight new employees to the train service operation here. The company plans to hire about 40 more in that area this year, along with another 10 in other areas. That means up to 160 new jobs could be created at the company in Lincoln by the end of 2002.

"Burlington has been in Lincoln since 1869, the year our city was incorporated. It has been a great employer and an excellent corporate citizen. With 1,400 employees in Lincoln and about 4,000 in Nebraska, BNSF is a major economic factor in our state. We are very appreciative of the company's continued investment in Lincoln."
