Mayor Coleen J. Seng today encouraged the community to become involved in the 20th celebration of the Star City Holiday Festival November 28 through December 5. The Star City Holiday Parade, which attracts about 85,000 people to downtown Lincoln, will take place Saturday, December 4. Applications are now available for the 2004 Star City Holiday Parade presented by First National Bank and produced by Updowntowners, Inc., the Downtown Lincoln Association and the City of Lincoln.
“This year’s parade theme is ‘Our Lasting Treasure,’ so we are looking for entries that celebrate the lasting treasures of children and our community,” said Mayor Seng. “We are very proud that this family event has become the largest of its kind in a five-state area, so we hope the whole community will get involved in celebrating its 20th anniversary.”
Parade entries can include costumed characters, equestrian units, other animal units, floats, unique or vintage automobiles and walking units. The Parade also includes marching bands and giant balloons.
“This Festival would not be possible without the many volunteers, who work on every aspect of the event,” said Deb Johnson, Executive Director. “Volunteers are a major part of the parade selection committee, which reviews all the applications. Because the parade is limited to 90 minutes, the selection process has become quite competitive. The entries selected will be those that adhere to the selection criteria and include kid-friendly entertainment that provides a rich exposure of the numerous treasures we embrace.” Johnson said the criteria includes the entry’s entertainment value, design, adherence to the theme, use of sound, choreography, costuming and props.
Johnson said it takes the entire community to make this major regional event a success. The Updowntowners produce the Star City Holiday Festival through community funding and support. Sponsorship opportunities include balloons, costumed groups, marching bands, floats, awards and the Executive Clown Corps. Those wanting information on supporting the event can contact the Festival Headquarters at 434-6902.
Those planning events the week of the Star City Holiday Festival can also apply to be sanctioned events, which gives them the opportunity to be promoted as part of the Festival.
The Parade begins at 11 a.m. and is televised live on KOLN-KGIN-TV. The Star City Holiday Festival Parade guide, which includes Festival activity applications, Executive Clown information, entry information and application forms, is available from Updowntowners, Inc., 1200 “N” Street, Suite 101, Lincoln, Ne 68508. The deadline for applications is September 24. Those wanting more information can contact Festival headquarters and check out the Festival web site at www.starcityholidayfestival.org.
