Mayor Presents July Award of Excellence

Mayor Coleen J. Seng today presented the Mayor’s Award of Excellence for July to Public Health Nurse Kimberly Rettig with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department. The monthly award recognizes City employees who consistently provide exemplary service and work that demonstrates personal commitment to the City. The award was presented at the beginning of today’s City Council meeting.

Rettig, who has worked for the City since 1992, was nominated by Public Health Nursing Assistant Supervisor Patty Baker in the category of productivity. Baker said Rettig’s dedication to her clients “has impacted many lives and public health issues,” and she gave two examples of how Rettig’s education and support helped clients make major lifestyle changes:

  • A pregnant woman on Medicaid was making frequent trips to the emergency room because she had never been taught how to properly access health care. She is now pregnant with her third child and continues to use appropriate physician care.
  • Another pregnant client received no prenatal care and admitted to marijuana and methamphetamine use during her pregnancy. The father of the baby threatened to kick her out if she came home with the baby. With Rettig’s help, the baby’s father agreed to let them come home. The mother is drug-free and nurturing her baby. The baby has gained appropriate weight and has no developmental delays.

The Mayor shared excerpts of a letter from another of Rettig’s clients: “You can only imagine how many questions and concerns I had, with becoming a mother for the first time. I don’t know if it was her kindness, her knowledge or her true compassion that made me trust and confide in her. I truly feel that Kim Rettig not only provides me with much knowledge with every visit, but she is also the reason why I (continue to) become a better mother for my son each and every day.”

The other categories in which employees can be nominated are customer relations, loss prevention, safety and valor. All City employees are eligible for the Mayor’s Award of Excellence except for elected officials and some managers. Individuals or teams can be nominated by supervisors, peers, subordinates and the general public. Nomination forms are available from department heads, employee bulletin boards or the Personnel Department, which oversees the awards program.

All nominations are reviewed by the Mayor’s Award of Excellence Committee, which includes a representative with each union and a non-union representative appointed by the Mayor. Award winners receive a $100 U.S. savings bond, a day off with pay and a plaque. Monthly winners are eligible to receive the annual award, which comes with a $500 U.S. savings bond, two days off with pay and a plaque.
