Residents are invited to volunteer for the 11th annual "Wake Up the Beds" event beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Sunken Gardens, 26th and "D" streets. The event will end at noon unless the work is finished earlier. Volunteers will help to plant annuals in pre-assigned spaces.
"Wake Up the Beds" volunteers should bring a trowel and dress in appropriate work clothes. Those interested in volunteering should contact Janet Ball in Parks and Recreation by Tuesday, May 7. She can be reached at 402-441-7847 and firstname.lastname@example.org.
If it rains, staff will plant the garden the week of May 13, and volunteers are welcome to help.
This year's theme for the Sunken Gardens is "Directions, Only Up." The main garden colors will be variations of cranberry, coral pink, fuchsia, magenta, lime green, blue and white. The design patterns incorporate arrows pointing in many directions, but always up.
Garden Gab, a volunteer group that helps Parks and Recreation maintain Sunken Gardens, Hamann Rose Garden and the Rotary Strolling Garden, will begin meeting May 14. The group meets from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and Thursday at the Sunken Gardens.
