Fire Prevention Week is October 6 Through 12
Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) invites the public to participate in activities planned in conjunction with "Fire Prevention Week" October 6 through 12:
- Fire Chief John Huff will recognize Caiya Khammaly, a fourth-grader at Adams Elementary School, as the winner of the annual "Learn Not to Burn" poster contest. Chief Huff will present the first place ribbon to her at 8:10 a.m. Monday, October 7 at the school, 7401 Jacobs Creek Dr. The winning poster will be on display at the County-City Building, 555 S. 10th, for two weeks and also on the City website at fire.lincoln.ne.gov.
- LFR urges Lincoln families to participate in an all-city fire drill at 6 p.m. Wednesday, October 9. Fire companies across the City will be stationed in front of fire stations sounding their air horns as a call for all residents to test their smoke alarms and practice their fire escape plans.
Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.
In addition to the City website, more information on Fire Prevention Week can be found by visiting the National Fire Protection Association website at www.firepreventionweek.org.
