FAQ Added to City Survey on Public Safety Financing

Mayor Chris Beutler said the City's new online Taking Charge survey has prompted important questions from the public about funding public safety improvements. Public Safety Director Tom Casady has responded with an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) now available with the survey and at lincoln.ne.gov (keyword: survey faq). The FAQ is also available through the OPEN Lincoln public engagement tool at lincoln.mindmixer.com.

The public is being asked its opinions on how to fund a new 911 radio system and a fire station relocation plan. Casady is heading a 13-member public safety finance review committee that will make a recommendation on funding by the end of the year.

"What we have learned during the seven years of the Taking Charge engagement is that survey takers are quite serious about the choices they are asked to review," Beutler said. "They recognize that the survey is their opportunity to help shape the policies that impact their lives. That's why they seek out information and ask the tough questions."

The survey provides detailed background information on the two proposed public safety projects and gives respondents the opportunity to evaluate the possible funding strategies, including increases in the sales or property tax and making cuts in other areas. Survey participants also will be able to offer opinions on the importance of other community needs that could be financed if the community decides a sales tax increase is the best funding mechanism. The City again partnered with the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center on the survey.
