The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum will present the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department with its Blazing Star Award this afternoon. The award "recognizes an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution toward advancing the horticultural use of native plants or the restoration of native plant communities in Nebraska." The award will be presented during an awards ceremony that begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Student Union on UNL's East Campus.
The City is being recognized specifically for the use of native plants at Union Plaza and along the Airport Entry Corridor.
"We choose to use native plants for practical ecological reasons to make our public spaces more functional and sustainable," said Lynn Johnson, Parks and Recreation Director. "Beyond that, native plants are historically and culturally significant. These are the plants that have existed here in the tall grass prairie for thousands of years."
