The public is invited to attend free "Medicare ABCs" workshops at several Lancaster County Senior Center locations in April and May. The workshops are sponsored by Aging Partners and conducted by the Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), a division of the Nebraska Department of Insurance. The dates, times and locations are:
Medicare coverage is nearly universal for Americans age 65 and over, but a recent survey shows 57 percent of baby boomers have a poor understanding of the coverage. For example, three out of four did not know that Medicare requires payments for premiums, copays and deductibles.
The Waverly workshop will be presented by SHIIP Director Alicia Jones, and the Hickman and Firth workshops will be presented by Bobbie Kierstead, a certified SHIIP counselor. "With 200 Nebraskans turning 65 every day, information about Medicare is in high demand," said Kierstead. "Even people who have had Medicare for years are anxious to get impartial information. These presentations are designed for consumers who want to learn more about Medicare in an easy-to-understand format without any sales pressure."
Reservations are not required for the workshops, but those who want to eat lunch (optional) prior to the workshop must call Paula Chamberlain at 402-416-7693. A financial donation for the lunch is requested.
SHIIP is federally funded and offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling and consumer education to seniors and disabled Nebraskans. SHIIP does not sell or promote any insurance products.
