May is National Bike Month

Public can help City and State repeat as National Bike Challenge champions!

To celebrate National Bike Month in May, the Parks and Recreation Department invites cyclists to start pedaling to repeat as National Bike Challenge champions in both Lincoln and Nebraska. The 2017 National Bike Challenge begins May 1 and runs through September 30. To participate, sign up at nationalbikechallenge.org.

In 2016, Lincoln defeated friendly rival Madison, Wisconsin to become the top cycling community among cities of our class (population 200,000 or greater) with more than 780,000 miles ridden. Nebraska was also the champion in the State competition. Lincoln also won the competition in 2013.

Other cycling events this spring include the following:

Tour de Lincoln - Hosted by the Great Plains Trails Network (GPTN), this free event showcases trails in all four quadrants of the City. The four separate rides all begin at 6 p.m. at the Jayne Snyder Trails Center, 21st and "Q" streets. For more information, visit gptn.org. Dates are as follows:

Bike to Work Week - May 12 through 19. Watch for announcements detailing the City's kickoff rally and weekend celebration.

Trail Trek - Sunday, June 25 at Haymarket Park, 403 Line Drive Circle. This celebration of Lincoln's trail system is led by GPTN and features four fun rides of 11, 14, 24 and 45 miles. Each participant receives a shirt, a water bottle (first 1,000 entries), on-trail water and snacks, and lunch at Haymarket or Cortland Park. To register or for more information, visit gptn.org.
