Pioneers Park Prescribed Burn Possible Today

Lincoln Parks and Recreation staff may conduct a prescribed burn this afternoon on a section of Pioneers Park Nature Center. The burn will be near the intersection of S.W. 56th and West Van Dorn streets. The controlled burn may be postponed depending on weather conditions and air quality.

"The burn will help restore native plant communities and reduce the fuel load of plant matter that could contribute to a wildfire," said Chris Myers, Parks and Recreation Operations Manager.

The area within the controlled burn totals 81 acres of prairie. Staff reminds the public to stay clear of the area. Traffic to the Nature Center and surrounding park areas will not be affected.

Land managers monitor weather and air quality conditions to ensure safe burns.
