AAA - The Auto Club Group and The Cornhusker Motor Club Foundation (CMCF) will present a $7,000 check Tuesday, May 8 to support the child car seat safety program in Lincoln and Lancaster County. The presentation will start at 5:45 p.m. at Fire Station 14, 5435 N.W. 1st St.
The donation to Safe Kids Lincoln-Lancaster County (SKLLC) and Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) will help provide a new site for child car seat inspections and distribution at Station 14. The station offers the service on the second Tuesday and fourth Saturday of each month. Appointments for car seat inspections are required by calling the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) at 402-441-8045.
"Nationally, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable death and injury to children," said Brian Baker, LLCHD Injury Prevention Program Supervisor. "According to Safe Kids Worldwide, correctly-used car seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Our car seat check events suggest that three out of four car seats checked in Lancaster County are not used or installed correctly."
Baker said SKLLC and its partners have worked to increase child passenger safety for 23 years. In the past five years, over 3,400 car seats have been checked for proper installation and use, and 1,550 car seats have been provided to families financially unable to purchase them.
Rose White, Executive Director of the CMCF, and Marilyn Muir of AAA-The Auto Club Group will present the check. Baker said the two organizations are long-time SKLLC partners and have provided significant financial support of child passenger safety efforts in Lincoln and Lancaster County. Other local officials participating in the event include LFR Fire Chief Micheal Despain; Baker; Khamisa Abdalla, Asian Community and Cultural Center; and Ladonna Tool, SKLLC Child Passenger Safety Task Force, CHI Health St. Elizabeth.
