The Parks and Recreation Department invites the public to register for the inaugural Feet First Fun Run June 9 at Mahoney Park, 70th and Fremont streets. Races will start at 9 a.m., and the course will be on paved paths. Participants may park on the west side of the park and check in at the main park shelter. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Feet First program at the "F" Street Community Center.
Established in 2015, the Feet First program encourages fitness, community and positive choices for inexperienced youth and adults runners. The program is free, and each participant receives coaching, free shoes and free entry to local road races. Over 100 youth and 150 adults have participated in the program in the last two years, including one athlete competing in the Lincoln Half Marathon. Feet First is made possible through Lincoln Parks and Recreation, the Community Health Endowment and Lincoln Running Company.
"Parks and Recreation strives to create recreational opportunities for all residents," said Mary Johnson, Feet First Director. "Feet First is an outreach program designed to include nontraditional participants while focusing on fitness, community and healthy choices."
Runners can register online at GetMeRegistered.com (keyword: Feet First). Fees are $10 for the one-mile run and $20 for the 5K run until May 31. Fees increase to $15 and $25 after June 1. The first 50 registrants will receive a Dry-Fit shirt.
