Nature Center Hosts October Events

The Pioneers Park Nature Center, 3201 S. Coddington Ave., invites the public to the following programs in October:

Fall Fun Day - Friday, October 12, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This day camp for elementary-age students is scheduled during Lincoln Public School's fall break. Activities include a hayrack ride, outdoor exploration, campfire, marshmallow roasting and more. Participants should bring a sack lunch and come prepared to spend most of the day outside. The program fee is $40 per child. Extended hours from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. are available at no additional cost. The deadline for the registration, waiver form and program fee is October 3.

Fall Harvest: Prairie Seed Collection - Saturday, October 13, 9 to 11 a.m. The Center is seeking volunteers to help collect seeds for prairie restoration. Each year, seeds are collected from the grasses and flowering plants in the prairie. The seeds are then distributed in areas with less diversity to enhance the prairie ecosystem. No prior experience is necessary. Dress for the weather, bring work gloves, and wear suitable shoes for walking off trail in the prairie. The registration deadline is October 10.

Composting Workshop - Saturday, October 13, 10 to 11 a.m. Extension Master Gardeners will demonstrate how to maintain three types of composting bins. The workshop takes place at the composting demonstration area across the road from the Prairie Building. Registration is not required for this free program, which is sponsored by Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County and the City of Lincoln Recycling Office.

Saturday with our Naturalist - Saturday, October 20, 2 to 3 p.m. Join Nature Center Naturalist Jamie Kelley for a guided hike to observe the flora and fauna of the area. Dress for the weather. The registration deadline is October 17 and the program fee is $5 per person.

Night Hike - Friday, October 26, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the nocturnal world around the Center. If skies are clear, a moonrise hike is included. The registration deadline is October 24 and the program fee is $8.50 per person.
