VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR EIGHTH ANNUAL "WAKE UP THE BEDS" SUNKEN GARDENS EVENT
Citizens are invited to volunteer and experience the joy of gardening during the Eighth Annual “Wake Up the Beds” event from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 15 at Lincoln’s Sunken Gardens, 26th and “D” streets.
The “Wake Up the Beds” event will involve planting annuals in pre-assigned spaces, helping bring the Gardens to all their glorious color this season. This year’s theme is “Power of the Peacock.” The main garden colors will be variations of royal blues and purples and will include peach-colored flowers with a mixture of silver.
“Wake Up the Beds” volunteers should dress appropriately in work clothes and are asked to bring a trowel and a willingness to get involved and participate.
The event will take place rain or shine. Volunteers are invited to arrive at Sunken Gardens at 8 a.m. to get registered and enjoy coffee and donuts courtesy of the Lincoln Parks Foundation. The Public Garden Section of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department will be installing the remaining garden plants from May 17 through May 21. Volunteers are also welcome to participate in the effort.
The Sunken Gardens is Lincoln’s horticultural gem and national treasure. Those interested in volunteering are asked to respond by Wednesday, May 12 to Janet Ball at 441-7035 or e-mail forestry@lincoln.ne.gov.
