Summer Nature Camps

Nature Explorers Camp, 2016

Monday, March 7 – Friday, March 11, 2016
Time: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm    |    Extended hours 7:30-8:30 am and 5:00-5:30 pm
Ages: 6-12 years old    
Fee: $180/child
Location: Pioneers Park Nature Center

Spend the week learning about nature, playing games, and exploring at Nature Explorer Camp. Campers will spend time outdoors every day. Bring a sack lunch and come prepared to have a fun week making discoveries and new friends. Register by February 29.

Leadership Camp

Dates: Monday, June 6 – Friday, June 10
Time: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm   |   Extended hours 7:30-8:30 am and 5:00-5:30 pm
Ages: 14-17 years old
Fee: $135/week
Location: Wilderness Park, 1st and Calvert St.

Learn, polish, and practice your leadership skills through team building exercises and outdoor education activities. Following Leadership Camp, attendees can assist at Wilderness Nature Camp over the summer as Junior Counselors. Call the Nature Center for more information.

Wilderness Nature Day Camp

Days: Monday-Friday, June 13 – August 5*There will not be camp the week of July 4th.
Time: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm   |   Extended hours 7:30-8:30 am and 5:00-5:30 pm
Ages: 6-13 years old
Fee: $180/week, save $10 if registered by May 1st
Location: Wilderness Park, 1st and Calvert St.

    Outdoor fun and adventure is guaranteed at Wilderness Park Day camp. Campers will spend the week hiking, exploring, crafting, making friends, and making lasting memories. Each week includes a field trip to a different location. Sign your explorer up for one week or all seven! Themes and activities change each week. A camp t-shirt is included with registration.

    June 13-17, Mammoths and More
    What will you unearth at camp? Discover what roamed through Nebraska millions of years ago and what’s here today.
    June 20-24, Survival of the Fittest
    What’s the key to survival? Learn how plants and animals survive and improve your own outdoor survival skills including archery and tracking.
    June 27 - July 1, Wildlife Rescuers
    How can you help wildlife? Explore local wildlife, what is needed for animals to thrive in the wild and learn about wildlife conservation.
    July 11-15, Bike Camp (9-13 year olds)
    Spend most of the week biking on trials, learning bike safety, and the basics of cyclocross.
    July 11-15, Naturally Made (6-13 year olds)
    Calling all artists. Get inspired by the world around you and create various works of art.
    July 18-22, Bull’s Eye
    Practice hitting the mark through archery, sling shots, and other target practice at camp. Learn about animals and how they hit their marks too.
    July 25-29, Aquatic Adventures
    Creeks, streams, lakes, and more will be explored during this week. Learn about aquatic life and conduct your aquatic investigations.
    August 1-5, Mega Micro Mysteries
    Use different tools to take a closer look and uncover clues that will help answer questions and solve a mystery during camp.

Camp Discovery, 2016

Days: Monday – Thursday, June 6 – July 21
*There will not be camp the week of July 4.
Time: 9-11:30 am
Ages: 3-6 years old
Fee: $80/week
Location: Pioneers Park Nature Center,
Prairie Building Preschool Classroom

    Different themes each week will introduce your child to the natural world. Campers will learn through outdoor exploration, crafts, and nature games.

    June 6-9, Seeds and Soil
    Dig, plant, and learn in the Children’s Garden. Get ready to get your hands dirty and explore gardens while learning about what plants need to grow.
    June 13-16, Just Hike
    Trek around the Nature Center. Head north, south, east, and west to discover various plants and animals in their habitats. We’ll be hiking about 1.5 hours each day, weather permitting.
    June 20-23, Enchanted Woodlands and Friends
    Explore the magic of the woods at the Nature Center. Learn about our woodland friends and look for fairies and gnomes that might also make their home here.
    June 27-30, Outdoor Play Space
    Spend the week digging, building, and splashing in the Edna Shields Outdoor Play Space at the Nature Center.
    July 11-14, Sticks, Sticks, and More Sticks
    Sticks are adventuresome and fun! We’ll build, stack, and do crafts with the sticks we find during our stick hike at the Nature Center.

Wilderness Leadership Camp, 2016

Days : Tuesdays, Sept. 20 - Nov.1
Time : 6 - 8 pm
Grades : 7-9
Fee : $60/person*
Location : Prairie Building
Learn by doing. Build wilderness and leadership skills during 7 sessions of outdoor, natural history, and leadership training. Sessions will include fire starting, shelter building, outdoor cooking, making your own camp gear, star navigation, and more! This program will be led by Sam Larson, runner up on season 1 of the History Channel’s survival series, "Alone". This program is by application only and requires a participant application. Please contact the Nature Center for details. *Scholarships are available.

Fall Fun Day, 2016

Days: Friday, Oct. 14
Time: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Grades: K-5
Fee: $35/person
Location: Prairie Building
Children in elementary school (K-5th grade) can spend a day with friends at the Nature Center. Games, crafts, hayrack rides, s’mores, hiking, and more will fill your day out of school. All children must come prepared to be outside for the majority of the day and bring a sack lunch.
