Bringing together small towns in Lancaster Co., NE, to share information, ideas, visions of the future, and increase vitality in their communities.

My Town, Lancaster County is a project lead by the Lancaster County Planning Department with the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners and the Lancaster County Extension Office as partners. In March, My Town, Lancaster County brought together the small towns of Lancaster County to share information and ideas, discuss visions of the future, plan for future projects and activities and energize residents who are interested in bringing increased vitality to their communities. My Town, Lancaster County is intended to bring resources and tools to these communities and serve as a jumping off point for bigger and better things.

This three day workshop addressed the challenges and opportunities afforded to the small towns in Lancaster County, a County which is dominated by the City of Lincoln. Topics of community identity, unique attributes and opportunities, the challenges of keeping a small town vibrant in the shadow of a major city, and resources and tools for bringing vision to reality, as well as others, were discussed. The communities of Bennet, Denton, Firth, Hallam, Hickman, Panama, and Waverly participated in the three day workshop.

The My Town, Lancaster County workshop was made possible through an award from the Citizens' Institute on Rural Design™ (CIRD). CIRD workshops bring together local leaders, non-profits, community organizations, and citizens and a team of specialists in design, planning, community and economic development, and creative placemaking to address design challenges identified by the host communities.

The Citizens' Institute on Rural Design™ (CIRD) is a National Endowment for the Arts leadership initiative in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Project for Public Spaces, Inc., along with the Orton Family Foundation and the CommunityMatters® Partnership. Established in 1991, CIRD has convened more than 60 rural design workshops in all regions of the country, empowering residents to leverage local assets in order to build better places to live, work, and play. My Town - Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper

Thanks to our generous partners who enabled us to keep costs of the workshop very low, we ended up with leftover funds from the CIRD award! The money was used to design and organize two "Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper" (LQC) demonstration projects in Lancaster County. Congratulations to Bennet and Hallam for being selected to host a LQC project!

"Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper" (LQC) is a phrase to describe the simple, short-term, and low-cost solutions that are having remarkable impacts on shaping neighborhoods and cities around the world. LQC projects demonstrate how communities can be created and transformed by making a series of affordable, human-scale, and near-term changes. For more information visit
