Polar Bear Plunge 2009 Freezin' for a Reason to Benefit Special Olympics Nebraska
The Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Bear Plunge 2009 is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2009, at Holmes Lake Park, S. 64th Street and Normal Boulevard. Participants collect pledges from friends and family as encouragement for jumping into icy waters in the middle of winter. According to the Special Olympics Nebraska website, www.sone.org, the plunge consists of running to a marked target in the water and then back. This target is waist to chest deep. Participants plunge individually or as a team. All proceeds will benefit individuals with intellectual disabilities through Special Olympics Nebraska.
Registration is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The plunge starts at 11 a.m. The first year the fundraising event came to Lincoln, 50 people plunged, helping raise $3,000. Last year, the participants were able to raise over $35,000.00 for the charity. Even if you do not want to take part by plunging into the chilly water, join us by cheering on the participants.
