One Arrested for Lincoln Homicide

On 6-15-2013, at 1:34 a.m., officers with the Lincoln (NE) Police Department were sent to 316 West Saunders Avenue on a report of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found 38-year-old Shane Christopher Newman with injuries to his chest and both arms. He was transported to the hospital, where he subsequently died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Further investigation revealed that Shane Newman exchanged words with other party attendees at the West Saunders residence. A fight ensued in the front yard, at which time gunshots were heard. Four .45 caliber shell casings were located at the scene. Witnesses reported that 21-year-old Michael Alex Arellano was seen in possession of a handgun at the party. Approximately one hour after the shooting, Michael Arellano was contacted in front of his residence, 2900 Apple. During a search of the vehicle he arrived in, a .45 caliber handgun was located.

A second victim, 22-year-old Mohaned Alhaj, was also treated for injuries sustained during the argument. Mohaned Alhaj had been on the front porch of 316 West Saunders when he was struck by two bullets to his right leg. He has been released from the hospital.

Michael Arellano was arrested for Accessory to a Felony and lodged at the Lancaster County Jail. The Lancaster County Attorney's Office will review the investigative reports to determine what specific charges to file. Michael Arellano is expected to appear in court early this week.

This is the first reported homicide in Lincoln in 2013.
