Nathaniel Gonzalez Arrested in Child Abduction
On September 27, 2013, at 9:00 a.m., the Lincoln (NE) Police Department was dispatched to a disturbance in the 4600 block of Stockwell. Nathaniel Gonzalez was visiting his cousin and her son, 13 month old Kharim Moreira. Nathaniel made delusional statements, indicating that he felt Kharim was his son. Suddenly, Nathaniel Gonzalez grabbed the child and ran from the apartment. Kharim's mother gave chase, screaming for help. Neighbors tried to stop him, but were not successful. Nathaniel Gonzalez left in a red 2007 Chevy Aveo, registered to another family member.
With the assistance of the Nebraska State Patrol helicopter, members of the Lincoln Police Department searched for Kharim Moreira and Nathaniel Gonzalez. Just before 11:00 a.m., the Emergency Communication Center received a call from a citizen. As a result of the extensive media coverage and AMBER Alert, she recognized the Chevy Aveo parked in the parking lot of Target, 333 N 48th Street. Target employees were contacted and they relayed information that Nathaniel Gonzalez and the boy were inside the store.
At 11:07 a.m., Nathaniel Gonzalez was taken into custody by Lincoln Police Department officers. The child was not harmed and has been returned to his mother. Nathaniel Gonzalez was lodged at the Lancaster County Jail for felony theft and kidnapping.
