Two Related Deaths Under Investigation
On December 1, 2013, at 2:45 a.m., officers with the Lincoln (NE) Police Department were sent to 814 S.18th Street #4 on a disturbance. En route, dispatch advised that gunshots were heard in the area. Twenty year old Erick Musito was found inside the apartment with gunshot wounds to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased. Witnesses reported that twenty-two year old Hector Lopez was responsible for the shooting. They advised that Hector Lopez and Erick Musito, members of rival gangs, exchanged words with one another inside the apartment. Hector Lopez left, but returned minutes later armed with a handgun. He was angry and fired several rounds at Erick Musito. Hector Lopez then fled the scene.
During the investigation, Lincoln police received information that Hector Lopez may be staying at a relative's home, 2545 Theresa #A10. The SWAT Team was activated and attempts were made to contact Hector. He refused to negotiate or to exit the home. At 3:45 p.m., several gunshots were heard inside the residence. Hector Lopez was later found deceased. An autopsy is pending, but his injury appears self-inflicted.
The investigation into both deaths is on-going. At this time, no other suspects are being sought.
Erick Musito's death is the fifth homicide reported in Lincoln in 2013.
