Public Safety Alert - Synthetic Marijuana (K2/Spice) Dangers

In the past 7-10 days, the greater Lincoln area has experienced a significant increase in the number of medical emergencies and drug overdoses associated with the use (smoking) of synthetic marijuana. Synthetic marijuana is also known as "K2" or "Spice" and comes in a variety of brands and flavors that are packaged in an enticing and attractive manner. The substance has the appearance of a plant like material and is smoked like marijuana.

Locally, the medical emergencies and overdoses have resulted in vomiting, seizures, and bizarre behavior. Many have also resulted in emergency room visits and hospitalization. Regionally, there has been one death generally attributed to the ingestion of synthetic marijuana.

Synthetic marijuana is not a 'harmless' substance. The chemicals that are applied or sprayed to the plant material are randomly altered by producers thus making it difficult to predict individual reaction of smoking it. Please seek medical attention immediately for anyone that ingests synthetic marijuana.

If you have information that you would like to share with investigators about synthetic marijuana, you may contact the Lincoln Police Department at 402.441.6000 or report the information anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 402.475.3600.
