Woman Arrested After Stealing Beer Truck
On April 13, 2016, at 5:30 a.m., officers with the Lincoln Police Department were dispatched to the KwikShop convenience store, 2710 W Street. An employee of K & Z Distributing parked a semi-trailer in the parking lot as he was unloading beer into the business. The truck was not running, but the keys were in the ignition, doors unlocked. When the employee exited the KwikShop, he noticed the truck running and a woman was seated behind the wheel. He hopped up to open the doors, only to find them locked. He immediately jumped down and called 911.
When officers arrived, the woman intentionally rammed one of the cruisers, as she navigated out of the lot. The officer was still seated inside the cruiser, but was not injured. A pursuit was initiated, as she drove northbound on N. 27th Street and then east.
Near N. 48th Street & Cleveland Avenue, an officer was outside his cruiser, preparing to deploy stop sticks. The driver intentionally swerved toward the officer, in an attempt to strike him with the semi. He was able to get out of the way, unharmed. For safety reasons, the pursuit was terminated near N. 48th Street and Leighton Avenue.
A short time later, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department located the vehicle on the University's East Campus. The semi crashed into a several fixed objects before coming to rest in a ravine. Danna Jean Hespen was located in the cab of the semi. She was taken into custody and later lodged at the Lancaster County Jail. She was issued citations for Auto Theft, Fleeing to Avoid Arrest, two counts of Assault on an Officer and DUI. A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) evaluation indicated a presence of stimulants.
