- Have students press the button to activate the crossing light.
- Encourage the students to pay attention to the pedestrian crossing signal, and do their visiting with their friends after they have crossed.
- When the "WALK" signal comes on, students need to look in all directions to make sure traffic is slowing to a stop before stepping off the curb.
- Students should stay within the crosswalk.
- Students that have started to cross when the "DON'T WALK" or "HAND" signal begins to flash should continue to cross. The lights are preset to flash long enough for a child to cross.
- Instruct children to look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
- Students should stand back from the curb while waiting for the pedestrian light to change.
- When the "WALK" signal comes on, students need to watch for vehicles that may be turning into the crosswalk.
- Students should not stop, play, or turn around and go back after they have started crossing.
- Students should not step off the curb or enter the crosswalk when the "DON'T WALK" or "HAND" signal is flashing or solid.
- At fully signalized intersections, students should cross with the pedestrian signals and not with the "green" or traffic signal.
- Students should not enter the crosswalk when emergency vehicles are approaching, even if the "WALK" signal comes on.
