14th Street is scheduled to be closed from Fletcher to Morton
February 21–May 25, 2012.
14th Street is scheduled to be closed from Hilltop to Superior
May 18–July 27, 2012.
This project consists of improving 14th Street from Superior Street to the I-80 bridge. The street will have two lanes in each direction with a center median. The intersections at 14th and Superior and 14th and Fletcher will also be improved. At 14th and Superior, a multi-lane roundabout will be put in place to increase efficiency and improve safety at the intersection. A traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Fletcher Ave. and 14th Street.
Many improvements will be constructed with this project for bicyclists and pedestrians. A new bike trail will be built on the west side of 14th Street for the entire length of the project. The bike trail will tie into the east/west bike trail that currently runs along the south side of Superior St. The bike trail will have a grade separated crossing on Superior St. just west of the 14th and Superior intersection. There will also be a grade separated crossing constructed for the Superior Street trail just south of the 14th and Superior Street intersection. Additionally, on the North and East sides of the new roundabout at 14th and Superior, two new pedestrian signals will be constructed to allow pedestrians to cross both 14th and Superior Streets at grade.
Construction began October 25, 2011. The construction will be completed in several phases, starting south of Superior and then moving north. Superior Street will not be closed during this project, however traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for several months. Access to local businesses at the intersection of 14th and Superior will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. The roundabout at 14th and Superior is scheduled to open for traffic by August 10, 2012. 14th Street is scheduled to be open to traffic from I-80 to Superior Street by November 21, 2012, with a final completion date of May 30, 2013.
