"P" St. Streetscape Project
11th Street to Centennial Mall
May 13, 2014 Construction Update
Progress continues to be made on the project in the phases that are currently under construction. Favorable conditions have allowed the contractor to pour some large areas of pavement. This helps to provide a stable area to work and not have to fight mud should unexpected May showers strike. As the work continues to advance into new phases, please remember that all businesses remain open throughout the course of the project. Sidewalk closures do continue to change on a regular basis so please pay attention to the pedestrian routing that is in place when trying to access a particular business.
As indicated in the last update, there is an important change to be expected in the closing of 13th Street between "P" Street and "Q" Street. This closure is being pushed a few days and is now scheduled to begin on Thursday, May 15, but given the weather over this past weekend the closure may need to be further delayed until Monday, May 19. Please watch for updates here on the website and on the message board currently located on "Q" Street at the corner of 13th Street. This closure will be necessary to allow for the installation of storm sewers and relocation of a traffic signal pole. As a part of this work, the sidewalk around Civic Plaza that is currently routed in the streets behind water-filled barricades will be closed. The businesses along the north side of "P" Street between 13th and 14th Streets will need to be accessed from 14th Street. While inconvenient, this sidewalk closure is necessary to maintain the schedules of the project and help the contractor to continue toward completion at the end of the summer. Also to be expected as a part of this work is the extension of the north lane closure along "P" Street through to 14th Street. This will be necessary to create a work zone along the north side of the street. When this does occur there will still be two through lanes maintained along "P" Street.
Work along the south side of the street between 11th Street and 12th Street is taking place to complete installation of the light pole bases. Some temporary street lighting will be installed on this block in the coming weeks.
Work along the south side of the street from 12th Street to 13th Street continues. The southwest corner of 13th Street is nearly complete with the planting areas and bioretention area to be finished. This work can be expected to be completed before the closure of 13th Street.
The work on the south side of the street between 13th and 14th Streets continues. The contractor has been maintaining a pedestrian corridor along this block allowing access to the businesses while they complete the work with the underground silva cells and parking setback areas. The completion of the underground silva cells and bioretention areas around the Rococo Theatre are taking place while having to carefully work around utilities and basements. The bioretention area at the southeast corner of 13th St. has been delayed by numerous utilities. The contractor has already poured back most of the structures and will work toward completing this area before the closure of 13th Street.
The work on the east side of 14th Street from "O" to "P" Streets continues. The contractor has maintained the pedestrian corridor with access to all businesses. Large areas of the parking setbacks have been poured back along the block. The alley return should be expected to be reopened as soon as the concrete is cured. Due to the damaged utility at 14th & "P" Street, the contractor is working toward restoring one lane of 14th Street to through traffic as soon as possible.
The contractor has restored most of the pavement on the south side of "P" Street from 14th Street to Centennial Mall. They expect to pour the sidewalk back in the coming week.
The intersection of "P" Street and Centennial Mall has been reopened with two through lanes 6 days ahead of schedule. The signal at Centennial Mall should be turned on as of today. The pedestrian crossings continue to be closed and pedestrians are still being detoured to the nearest signalized intersections. Both the Nebraska History Museum and the Lincoln Children's Museum continue to be open and accessible.
The north side of "P" Street from 11th Street to 12th Street is under construction and progressing quickly despite the weather. The contractor has demolished nearly all of the pavement and sidewalk and has installed some areas of storm sewer. The sidewalk corridor is currently open along the building fronts and access to all businesses is being maintained through the duration of this work.
