South Salt Creek and South Lincoln Quiet Zone Construction

The City of Lincoln began constructing the South Salt Creek and Lincoln South Quiet Zones April 2011. After construction is complete, the Quiet Zones will be enacted and the railroad will be notified that they have 30 days to quiet the routine sounding of horns when they approach the Quiet Zone Crossings.

  • 1st Street south of "J" Street
  • 2nd Street south of "J" Street
  • "J" Street west of 4th Street
  • "D" Street west of 3rd Street

2nd Street was closed to the public February 8, 2011 as part of the quiet zone preparation. "J" Street will be closed to the public as part of the project. Medians have been installed on the approaches to the railroad tracks on 1st Street south of "J" Street and on "D" Street west of 3rd Street. As part of the construction on "D" Street, 3rd Street dead-ends north and south of "D" Street.

The "D" Street crossing has been included in the Lincoln South Quiet Zone corridor at the request of BNSF railroad. After work completes at 1st Street and "J" Street, the South Salt Creek Quiet zone will include the following crossings.

  • 1st Street south of "J" Street – Public
  • "J" Street west of 4th Street – Private

  • "D" Street west of 3rd Street
  • South Street west of Park Blvd.
  • Park Blvd south of South Street
  • Pioneers Blvd. west of 8th Street
  • Old Cheney Blvd west of Hunts Drive
  • S 14th Street south of Yankee Hill Road

Construction has been completed on all the above crossings. Medians were installed at all locations, and Yankee Hill Road was widened to improve the approach distance from the intersection of 14th and Yankee Hill to the railroad crossing. "D" Street construction was done by the South Salt Creek Quiet Zone Project, and the crossing was included in the Lincoln South Quiet Zone at the request of BNSF.

The Notice of Establishment for the Lincoln South Quiet Zone was sent out in September 21, 2011. It states that the improvements agreed on by The City of Lincoln, Lancaster County, the Federal Railroad Administration, and BNSF have been completed, and routine locomotive horn use at the crossings will cease at 12:01 a.m. on October 22, 2011.

  • Saltillo Road west of 27th Street

Construction of medians on Saltillo Road will be completed in late fall 2011 or early spring 2012. As soon as that construction is complete, the Saltillo Road Crossing will be added to the Lincoln South Quiet Zone.
