The Lincoln Recycling Office was created in the fall of 1987 by Mayor Bill Harris. It was the first full-time municipal recycling coordinator position in the State of Nebraska. The creation of the position coincided with the development of a new sanitary landfill. The mission of the Recycling Office is to divert waste from the sanitary landfill in an economically and environmentally sound manner in full partnership with the private sector. The Recycling Office initially was located in the Economic Development Division of the Mayor's Office. In 1993 the office was transferred to Solid Waste Operations of the Public Works and Utilities Department.
