Rain to Recreation Projects
Type of Project:
Stream Channel Improvement
Water Quality Wetland
Two changes were made in Tierra Park to improve water quality of this stream, as well as those downstream. First, the low flows of the stream are diverted into the wetland that has been created in Tierra park. The wetland improves the quality of water by settling out sediments. The plants in the wetland use up harmful nutrients, which are carried with the stormwater runoff. Second, when rainfall causes the stream to rise, the flow continues down the stream to Beal Slough, with a portion flowing through the wetland. Previously, concrete was used to line the bottom of the stream channel. This concrete has been removed and the stream channel re-shaped with gently sloped sides, allowing water to soak into the soil and be filtered.
