Introducing the Lead Service Line Replacement Program

Back to Current Project Area Info

The City of Lincoln Water System is launching the Lead Safe Lincoln Lead Service Line Replacement Program, which plans to help customers replace older, lead or lead-contaminated galvanized water service lines on their property. The cost of replacement will be fully paid by the City. Your neighborhood has been identified as a priority area for lead service line replacement.

What does this mean for you?

Lincoln Water System will notify property owners that are likely to own a lead or lead-contaminated galvanized water service line and offer to replace it with a copper service line.

A packet will be mailed to property owners with information about this program. The packet will contain a Service Line Verification and Replacement Agreement. By completing this agreement, the property owner is giving permission to the City’s plumbing contractor to carry out a routine inspection and, if necessary, replace the existing lead service line. Completing the agreement ensures your inclusion in the service line replacement program.

When will it happen?

In the next few weeks, Lincoln Water System will mail property owners information about the program. Starting in June 2024, City-contracted plumbers will reach out to begin the replacement process.

What’s in it for you?

By accepting the offer to be included in the replacement program, you can find out for sure if you have a lead service line. The benefits of replacing your lead or lead-contaminated galvanized water service line can include:

  • Eliminating a potential source of lead and yellow water caused by your service line
  • Increasing the amount of water flow entering your home

By replacing your service line while the Lead Service Line Replacement Program is in your neighborhood, you’ll save on the cost of replacement, typically between $5,000 and $10,000.

Get involved!

Community participation is key to the success of this initiative. By working together, we can ensure that every household in our community has healthier access to Lincoln’s high quality drinking water for years to come.

If you are a renter, feel free to reach out to the property owner and encourage them to participate in this program.

The City of Lincoln plans to invite you and your neighbors to a public open house meeting in the coming weeks to provide additional information on the Lead Service Line Replacement Program. Keep an eye out for more details soon!
