Iron Horse Legacy Mural

A mural of a a train pulling into a new land.

About the Sculpture

Adorning the north wall of Lincoln Station, Jay Tschetter's mural depicts a locomotive traveling through the native prairie of Nebraska, after being chosen from nine entries for the park. The locomotive extends 2 feet out of the wall into a brick planter with Nebraska wildflowers to give the appearance of the train coming at the viewer as it turns the bend. On the opposing side, a herd of bison stands on the hills, recalling the early years of the railroad when it traveled through the vast prairie. The 5,800 bricks used in the mural were made at Yankee Hill Brick Manufacturing Company, which mined seven different rich Nebraska clays and fired them. Yankee Hill Brick Manufacturing Company has been making bricks for the city of Lincoln for more than 140 years.

About the Artist

Jay Tschetter founded Images in Brick in 1987 when he saw a photo of a brick sculpture in an Endicott Brick brochure and saw the world of possibilities of working with brick. Tschetter worked as a mason and a scrimshander (ivory artist) for 15 years before developing an interest in brick sculpture. His experience as a mason and as a part time artist in Nebraska made brickwork the perfect career.
