Lincoln Police Investigate Three Separate Shootings

UPDATE (September 9, 11:30 a.m.) 

The Lincoln Police Department is continuing to investigate two weekend shootings and is requesting the public share information with law enforcement regarding these ongoing investigations. First, we want to send our condolences to the families of the victims of this weekend’s incidents. Any shooting in the City of Lincoln is unacceptable and when someone succumbs to their injuries, our hearts go out to their loved ones and our attention focuses on holding those responsible accountable.

  • Despite immediate life-saving measures by police officers and medical personnel, 24-year-old Saiveon Hopkins passed away from a shot in the chest

  • The second victim sustained a laceration to his left calf

  • The Criminal Investigations Unit has been working around the clock on this investigation since the shooting, interviewing witnesses, reviewing video evidence and building a suspect description

  • The initial suspect description is: Black male, 5'7" tall, approximately 25 years old, wearing a white ski mask, blue hooded sweatshirt and black jeans

  • Not believed to be related to the football game in Lincoln Saturday evening

  • The initial suspect description is: Black male, 6'1" tall, 180 pounds, wearing all black clothing and a face mask

  • The weapon used in this shooting was a rifle and approximately 17 casings were found on the scene

  • The victim was in a vehicle that was struck by gunfire, another vehicle is being sought by law enforcement

  • LPD believes this shooting was targeted

UPDATE (September 8, 5:45 a.m.) | Despite immediate life-saving measures by medical personnel, the 24-year-old Lincoln man passed away from his injuries around 5:37 a.m. LPD is not releasing his name at this time while next of kin is notified. (C4-081023)

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) is investigating three shootings in the city and is requesting the public share information with law enforcement regarding two ongoing investigations. At this time, LPD does not believe the incidents are related.

On Sunday, September 8, around 1:30 a.m., officers in the downtown area were alerted to a fight in the 100 block of North 11th Street.

Upon arrival, officers located two men with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to an area hospital to receive emergency treatment. One victim, a 24-year-old Lincoln man, is currently in critical condition. The other, a Lincoln man in his forties, is considered stable with non-life-threatening injuries.

This investigation is ongoing and Lincoln Police request anyone with information, including video recordings of this event, to contact the non-emergency number at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600 if they wish to remain anonymous.

On Saturday, September 7, around 11:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of 33rd and Holdrege Streets on the report of gunshots heard. Upon arrival officers located one victim, a 20-year-old Lincoln woman, with gunshot wounds. Lincoln Fire and Rescue personnel took the victim to a local hospital for treatment, and her condition is reported as being stable.

Officers are currently seeking a suspect as part of an active investigation. This investigation is ongoing and Lincoln Police request anyone with information, including video recordings of this event, to contact LPD.

On Saturday, September 7, just after 7:45 p.m., officers responded to a weapons violation in progress in the area of N. 20th Street and Cornhusker Highway. Upon arrival, the caller told officers that 51-year-old David Blackburn of Lincoln had just shot multiple rounds at the building after the two had gotten into a verbal altercation.

Officers observed an occupied vehicle to have a bullet hole on the rear passenger side. Officers located six bullet holes in the exterior wall by the door where the caller exited from. Officers contacted Blackburn at a nearby hotel with the firearm and he was arrested.

Blackburn was taken to the Lancaster County Jail for:

1. Attempted 2nd Degree Assault 28-309(F3A)
2. Use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony 28-1205 (1)(B)(F2)
3. Discharge Firearm near vehicle/building 28-1212.04 (F1C)4. Terroristic Threats
