Seatbelt Use Enforcement Project Begins May 20

Published on May 20, 2024

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced the Make it Click seatbelt use enforcement project will run from Monday, May 20 through Sunday, June 2.

Additional officers will patrol Lincoln with a focus on traffic safety, employing a zero-tolerance approach to drivers who are stopped and found to not be using their seatbelts. This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Highway Safety Office.

In 2023, Nebraska’s average seat belt use rate was only 77.3%, which is significantly below the national rate of 91.9%. Across the country, someone is killed in a crash an average of every 47 minutes while not wearing a seatbelt. In 2022, 11,302 people killed in crashes were not wearing their seatbelts.

LPD urges drivers to make sure that they and their passengers are wearing their seatbelts.
