Prepare if You Are in a Floodplain

It's important to know if your home of business is located in a floodplain so that you can be prepared when a flood occurs. If you are, take steps to understand the risks and have an emergency preparedness plan to protect yourself and your property when flooding occurs.

  • Familiarize yourself with Lincoln's floodplains and learn if you are in one by reading the Be Flood Smart Frequently Asked Questions.
  • If you live in a floodplain, create and practice an emergency plan so your family will know what to do during a flood. Remember to plan for everyone in your home, including pets.
  • The City of Lincoln participates in the Community Rating System which rates communities on how effectively they manage their floodplains. Flood insurance premiums for residents within a community that participates in the CRS may be discounted. The City of Lincoln is currently a Class 5 community, which provides a 25% discount in flood insurance premiums for property owners that have flood insurance for properties in the floodplain.

Create Sustainable Landscapes

Incorporating native plants, pollinator-friendly species, and species with lower water needs is beneficial for conserving and managing stormwater and supporting local biodiversity.

  • The City of Lincoln Watershed Management Division offers a rebate of up to $2000 to Lincoln property owners for approved rainscaping projects. The program reimburses participants for 50% of qualifying expenses related to these projects. Check out the Rain Garden Design Guide and Resources from Nebraska Extensions for inspiration.
  • Plant native species and expand pollinator habitat. Visit the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum tips, help, and how-to for plants and flowers website. Consider purchasing plants from them and review their funding programs for Nebraska communities.
  • Interested in converting your lawn into a native or edible landscape? Antelope Gardeners' Alliance is a not-for-profit branch of Salt Creek Farmers' Cooperative. They operate with suggested donations and can assist you in returning your lawn into no or low-mow lawns, native landscapes, or edible landscaping.

Support Your Neighbor

Connecting with and supporting each other as a community is crucial as we face growing challenges.

  • Volunteer with the NeighborLNK Program. The program facilitates personal connections by directly linking volunteers with seniors (age 60 and older) or persons with disabilities who are homebound and seeking additional support.

Stay Aware

As Nebraska faces significant changes to its climate, an increase in warmer days and precipitation events will increase extreme weather events. To better protect yourself and your family, stay aware and be prepared for extreme weather and other emergencies.

  • Download the MyLNK App used to communicate emergency management situations and updates. The MyLink app provides a free, one-stop guide to resources.
  • Avoid impacts from high heat or low air quality by checking for Air Quality and Heat Risk. Individuals who work outside or have health conditions are more vulnerable and at risk.
