Opt for Active Transportation

Transportation represents approximately 28% of emissions in the U.S., and passenger vehicles account for half of that. Choosing alternative modes of transportation, such as busing, walking, or biking is one of the top ways to reduce your impact. Utilizing these types of transportation benefits both personal health and community well-being.

  • Ride a bus operated by StarTran, the City-owned bus system that provides citywide transportation to the residents of Lincoln. Visit the StarTran website for helpful videos, frequently asked questions, information on passes and fares, and to view other services.
  • Take advantage of Lincoln's trails and on-street bike facilities. With over 144 miles of hard surface and crushed rock trails, almost 27 miles of paved park trails, and Wilderness Park's unpaved 39 miles, you can get just about anywhere you want to go using both on and off-street routes.
  • BikeLNK is Lincoln's bike share program and offers residents and visitors the opportunity to rent a bike or a pedal-assist electric bike.
  • ScooterLNK, Lincoln's e-scooter program, provides another opportunity for sustainable transportation. Riders can download the vendor's app, Lime or Bird, to register and rent a scooter. For more information on how to ride, see Rules and Frequently Asked Questions.
  • If you own or operate a business in Lincoln, encourage your employees to use alternative transportation through the below opportunities:
    • As a part of the Complete Streets program, the City of Lincoln invites businesses and property owners to apply for free bike racks. View the program guidelines and the application form by selecting the “Bike Rack Request Program” button. Besides bike parking, large employers and public agencies should consider providing lockers and shower facilities.
    • Become a Bicycle Friendly Business℠ (BFB℠) through the League of American Bicyclists. Through BFB℠, employers are recognized for their efforts to encourage a more welcoming atmosphere for bicycling employees, customers, and the community.

Electrify Your Commute

Consider buying an electric vehicle the next time you're in the market for a car. Besides being environmentally friendly, electronic vehicles can save you money by spending less on gas and maintenance.

Reduce Driving Trips

Minimize the effects of driving by combining trips or working from home or videoconferencing when possible.
