Tree Removal in Wilderness Park begins December 8

Published on December 08, 2023

A tree removal project in Wilderness Park will run from Friday, December 8, through Friday, December 15. Trees will be removed along the former Rock Island Railway line west of the Great Plains Trails Network Connector Bridge and east of Highway 77.

There are no new trail closures for this project. Closures due to an ongoing project continue for the hiking/biking/equestrian trails west of Salt Creek between wayfinding posts 50 and 51, about one-half mile south of Warlick Boulevard.

The tree removal is to support a retrofit project on the Rock Island Bridge over Salt Creek scheduled for summer 2024. Tree removal is scheduled over the winter to avoid sensitive periods for threatened species, such as the Northern long-eared bat, and will be limited to the minimum amount necessary to support construction. Wood debris will remain on site.
