Public Invited To Bricks Of Honor Event June 8

The Parks and Recreation Department invites residents to the 28th annual Bricks of Honor dedication event 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, at Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park, 3200 Memorial Drive. The program will recognize 116 veterans who have been honored in the past year with a brick in the garden and marks the completion of more than four years of major renovations and improvements.

"Lincoln Parks Foundation is proud to work with Parks and Recreation to recognize these heroes for their brave service to our country," said Randy Gordon, Executive Director of Lincoln Parks Foundation. “The updated garden is a beautiful space for the community to gather and remember the sacrifices these men and women have made in the name of freedom.”

The Lincoln Parks Foundation also announced that California resident Kathy Strong, who wore a POW/MIA bracelet for nearly 40 years, will be in attendance. As a 12-year-old, Strong received the POW/MIA bracelet honoring Green Beret James Morland who went missing in Vietnam in 1968. She wore the bracelet until 2011 when Moreland’s remains were identified, and the bracelet was buried with him. Strong plans to honor Moreland in all 50 states and Nebraska’s Veterans Memorial Garden will be the 39th state in which he is memorialized.

The Veterans Memorial Garden was created after a traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall exhibit was displayed at Antelope Park in 1989. The garden contains over 5,000 personalized bricks that celebrate the pride, patriotism, and sacrifices of military personnel.
