LTU Encourages Community to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown”

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities encourages community members to prioritize their safety by following the "Turn Around, Don't Drown" guidelines when it comes to potential flooding.

Flooded streets can be deceptively dangerous. Tips to navigate flood waters include:

• Never Drive Through Flooded Roads: Even a small amount of water can hide deep potholes or cause your vehicle to stall. It only takes six inches of water to reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and potential stalling.
• Avoid Walking Through Flood Waters: Flood waters can conceal hazards such as sharp debris, open manholes, or electrical currents.
• Heed Road Signs and Barricades: Pay attention to and follow any posted signs or barriers that indicate road closures due to flooding. They are placed for your safety.
• Stay Informed: Monitor weather reports and emergency alerts. Pay attention to warnings about flash floods, which can occur suddenly and with little warning.
• Have an Emergency Plan: Ensure you and your family know what to do in the event of a flood. Establish a meeting place and keep a list of emergency contacts.
• Move to Higher Ground: If you encounter rising waters while on foot, seek higher ground immediately. Do not attempt to walk through floodwaters.
• Prepare Your Vehicle: If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is in good condition and has a full tank of gas. Carry an emergency kit with essentials such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.
• Educate Others: Spread the word about the dangers of driving or walking through flood waters. Share these tips with friends, family, and community members.
• Follow Local Authorities: Always follow the guidance and instructions from local emergency management and law enforcement agencies during flood events.
