Families Invited to Youth Sports Sign-Up Event April 3

Event offers affordable local sports options this summer

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD), in partnership with Lincoln Community Learning Centers (CLCs), invites families to the Youth Sports Sign-Up Event on Thursday, April 3. The free event, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Auld Pavilion Recreation Center, 1650 Memorial Drive, is designed to connect families with affordable youth sports opportunities this summer.

"We know that participation in sports not only improves physical fitness but also reduces the risk of chronic diseases and substance use, improves mental well-being, and fosters a stronger sense of community for youth," said Angelina Stovall-Amos, Public Health Education Supervisor at LLCHD. "This event is an exciting opportunity to connect families with resources that support those positive, long-term outcomes."

The event builds on the success of January's pilot Spring Sports Sign-Up Event, where 28 families representing more than 50 children explored local sports options. By expanding access to sports programs, the event aims to reduce barriers to physical activity and promote healthier lifestyles.

Families attending the event will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about local sports leagues and recreation programs for youth ages 3 through 16 and all skill levels before registration deadlines or late fees occur.
  • Connect with organizations offering affordable options, financial aid, or scholarship opportunities for youth sports.
  • Receive interpretation and translation assistance when speaking to sports vendors and completing registration forms, with interpreters available for multiple languages.
  • Receive free, gently used sports equipment provided through the YMCA of Lincoln’s Sports Equipment Drive (while supplies last). Volunteers will be available to help families select appropriate equipment.

For more information about the event or to learn how to donate sports equipment, contact the Health Department at 402-441-8071 or visit lincoln.ne.gov/SportsSignUp.
