Startran Offers Free Trip Home in Case of Emergency

Mayor Coleen J. Seng announced today that a test of StarTran's Alternative Ride Home program has been successful, and the StarTran Advisory Board has recommended that the service be continued on a permanent basis. The program offers regular StarTran riders a free taxi ride home from school or work, including volunteer work, if an emergency arises. Since the program began on trial basis in July 2003, 24 people have registered for the service, and StarTran has provided 13 rides home.

"We know more people would use StarTran to go to work or school if they were assured they could get home quickly in case of an emergency," said Mayor Seng. "This is an innovative idea StarTran is trying, and I encourage residents to take advantage of the new Alternative Ride Home program."

StarTran Transit Manager Larry Worth said the idea came from a patron at StarTran's annual town hall meeting. Lincoln's program was modeled after one used by Albuquerque, New Mexico. Customers can receive up to five free trips per calendar year, and there is no credit for unused rides. A "no-show"counts as a trip, and the customer can lose program privileges for multiple "no-shows."

Alternative Ride Home is available within StarTran's service area between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. weekdays (holidays not included). Acceptable emergencies are illness at work or school; illness of a family member; unscheduled overtime; or missing the last scheduled bus pick-up. When the service is needed, the StarTran customer calls 441-7194, confirms his or her registration and gives the pick-up and delivery addresses. The taxi driver will provide the paperwork for the customer to complete. The cost of the taxi is paid by StarTran.

StarTran customers can get a registration form by calling 476-1234, by stopping by the StarTran office at 710 "J" Street or through the City web site: (click on "bus transportation" on the home page). The form can be completed on-line, faxed to 441-7055 or dropped off or mailed to the StarTran office.
