The public is invited to celebrate National Pollinator Week at "Pollinators on the Plaza" from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 at Union Plaza, 21st and "P" streets. The free event is part of the Party in the Parks events and is coordinated by Lincoln Parks and Recreation and UNL Bee Lab: Entomology Department.
"National Pollinator Week is June 18 through 24 and celebrates of the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles," said Kat Scholl of Lincoln Parks and Recreation who is also a local beekeeper. "We are excited to partner with the UNL Bee Lab as well as the wonderful businesses and organizations that will be in attendance. This event shows the beauty and importance of all pollinators and allows the public to talk with knowledgeable people in the area."
Entertainment and art activities for the entire family include exhibits of live pollinators including honey and native bees; honey tastings; a pollinator artwork find and keep; face painting; balloon twisting; music by The Lincoln Continentals; pollinator yoga; public art scavenger hunt; and a life size kaleidoscope.
The UNL Bee Lab is assisting with the Nebraska Beekeepers Association's Bee Fun Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 24. This event is at the UNL Eastern Nebraska Research and Extension Center, 1071 County Road G in Ithaca, which is southeast of Wahoo in Saunders County. The event features presentations on beekeeping, value-added products and other topics. The registration fee for non-members is $60, and more information is available at nebraskabeekeepers.org.
Party in the Parks events began in 2013 to provide free community arts events in Union Plaza. In 2014, the Union Plaza Events became Party on the Plaza and the Party in the Parks initiative expanded to include other free performing and visual arts events in Lincoln's parks throughout the summer months.
