Mayor Proclaims Monday, October 8 as Indigenous Peoples Day

Mayor Chris Beutler has proclaimed Monday, October 8 as "Indigenous Peoples Day" in Lincoln to honor our Native American heritage. In 2016, the City Council unanimously passed a resolution to recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day.

The second Monday in October is also recognized as Columbus Day, a legal holiday, by the federal government and many states, including Nebraska. State and federal offices are closed on that day. The City of Lincoln does not recognize either Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day as legal holidays, and City offices will remain open. The Lincoln City Council, however, will not meet on October 8.

The proclamation reads:

Whereas, the City of Lincoln recognizes that the Indigenous Peoples of the lands that would later become known as the Americas have occupied these lands since time immemorial and that our City is built upon the homelands and villages of the Indigenous Peoples of this region; and

Whereas, the City values the many contributions made to our community though Indigenous People's knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy, arts and deep cultural contributions that have substantially shaped the character of Lincoln; and

Whereas, the City opposes the systemic racism toward Indigenous People, which perpetuates high rates of poverty and income inequality, exacerbating disproportionate health, education and social crises; and

Whereas, the City promotes the closing of the equity gap for Indigenous Peoples through policies and practices that reflect their experiences, ensure greater access and opportunity and honor our nation's indigenous roots, history and contributions; and

Whereas, Indigenous Peoples Day was first proposed in 1966 by a delegation of Native Nations to a United Nations-sponsored international conference; and

Whereas, in 2016, the Mayor and City Council of Lincoln jointly declared the second Monday in October to be Indigenous Peoples Day in Lincoln to promote the well-being and growth of our American Indian and Indigenous community,

Now, therefore, I, Chris Beutler, Mayor of the City of Lincoln, Nebraska, do hereby proclaim October 8, 2018 as "Indigenous Peoples Day" and encourage residents to celebrate the thriving cultures and values of the Indigenous Peoples of our region.
