Mayor Congratulates Washington on Appointment to City Council

Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird today said Sändra Washington, who was serving on the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission, is a great choice to fill the vacant at-large seat on the City Council. The Council today unanimously approved her appointment to fill the Council seat vacated when former Council member Gaylor Baird was sworn in as Mayor. Washington was sworn in at the end of today's City Council meeting and will fill the remainder of Gaylor Baird's Council term through May 2021.

"Sändra has done an excellent job as a Planning Commissioner, and she will serve our City well in her new role on the Council," Mayor Gaylor Baird said. "She has the experience, knowledge and dedication to make thoughtful decisions that will improve life in Lincoln."

Washington is originally from Columbus, Ohio, and has lived in Lincoln since 1990. She retired from a 25-year career with the National Park Service in 2014. She was appointed to the Planning Commission in 2016 to fill the unexpired term of a member who moved out of state.

Gaylor Baird will appoint a replacement for Washington on the Planning Commission, and that appointment requires approval by the City Council and County Board.
