Names Released in Homicide Investigation
On Sunday, June 26, 2016, at 3:06 a.m., the Lincoln Police Department responded to a physical altercation in the 3400 block of Portia Street. While investigating the incident, officers heard gun shots fired near Portia and Adams Streets.
The investigation revealed two females in separate vehicles were shot. The shooting is believed to have occurred on Portia Street, between Adams and Knox Streets. Both Lincoln women were transported to a local hospital. Marlene Rashidi, a 20-year-old female, was declared deceased. Dezarae Mann, a 23-year-old female, remains hospitalized in critical, but stable, condition.
Through witness interviews, Germichael Kennedy, a 22-year-old male, was developed as a suspect for the homicide and for the assault of Dezarae Mann. Just before 7 a.m., Germichael Kennedy's vehicle was found by officers in the area of N. 20th and Cornhusker Highway. An extensive search followed. Officers spotted Germichael Kennedy in the Belmont neighborhood, off Portia Street between Knox and Hartley Streets. Attempts to verbally and physically stop him were unsuccessful. A foot pursuit by multiple Lincoln police officers ensued.
Independent witness and officer interviews revealed the male displayed and pointed a handgun at the officers. He refused officers' requests to drop the gun. Two Lincoln police officers fired their weapons. Germichael Kennedy was pronounced deceased at the scene.
An independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting is being conducted by the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. A secondary administrative investigation will be completed by the Lincoln Police Department. As part of the standard protocol, the two officers directly involved have been placed on paid administrative leave.
