Directors Message

Maggie Stuckey-Ross

As we transition into the cooler months, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the unique and breathtaking beauty that fall and winter bring to our parks.

Fall is a magical time in our parks. The crisp air, vibrant colors, and the gentle rustle of fallen leaves make for an invigorating experience, whether you’re exploring our trails or simply enjoying a scenic picnic. Winter, too, offers its own serene charm. Our parks transform into a winter wonderland, with snow-covered landscapes and tranquil, frosted trees. It invites you to slow down and appreciate the quiet beauty of nature.

We encourage you to visit and experience the seasonal splendor that our parks have to offer. Whether you’re capturing the vibrant hues of fall or the serene whites of winter, there’s something truly special about the changing seasons.

Thank you for your continued support of our parks. We look forward to seeing you out there enjoying the beauty of the seasons!

Maggie Stuckey-Ross, Director

Nature Preschool

Pioneers Park Nature Center

(402) 441-7895
Established in 2000, Nature Preschool is a play-based program in which children learn by doing: hiking, climbing, digging, building, and being outdoors. The curriculum is built around children’s curiosity of the natural world while incorporating social emotional skills, problem solving, language, literacy, and math concepts to prepare for kindergarten and beyond. We believe that early childhood is a time for discovery, a time to enjoy the many miracles of the natural world such as: the colors of fall prairie grass, the texture of a snake's skin, the call of chorus frogs, the smell of plum blossoms, and the feel of cool, damp soil.

Special Olympics

What is Unified Sports?

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sports in common is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away. Our opponent is intolerance. Only shoulder-to-shoulder, as teammates together, can we defeat it. Join and take your place alongside the rest of our global game-changers today.

The Lincoln Shooting Stars team offers opportunities for Unified Sports in basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, soccer, swimming, track, and volleyball. If you are interested in participating as a Unified Partner in any of these sports, we would love to hear from you!

Forestry

Community Forestry Programs

Lincoln Community Forestry is FUNdamental to vibrant neighorhoods.

ADOPT-AN-ASH PROGRAM

trees.lincoln.ne.gov

We recognize that some citizens like to have options and be involved in determining the future of public trees near their homes. In that spirit, we are providing an option for those who would like to “adopt” an ash tree in the right-of-way by providing ongoing chemical treatment to minimize damage by Emerald Ash Borer.

Learn more about the program and download the permit application at trees.lincoln.ne.gov.

If a property owner wants to have a city tree treated for anything, not just EAB, an "Application for Permit to Treat" is required as directed by Municipal Code 12.20.040.

ASH TREE REMOVAL AND REPLANTING PROGRAM

The City of Lincoln received grant funding from the USDA Forest Service/Nebraska Forest Service to help low-to-moderate-income homeowners pay for the removal of ash trees and plant new trees at no cost. For more information about the program, and to see if you qualify, please go to lincoln.ne.gov/TreeRemovalGrant.

STREET TREE VOUCHER PROGRAM

The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department offers a cost-share assistance program to property owners in Lincoln who desire to purchase and plant a street tree(s) on the City right-of-way adjacent to their property. The $300 voucher is good toward the purchase and installation of a tree at participating local nurseries. The remaining balance of the cost of the tree and the planting of the tree will be at the homeowner’s expense. Certain conditions and requirements apply to the street tree voucher program.

Call (402) 441-7847, OPT. 0 to submit a request for voucher, or for more information.

Lincoln's Community Forest

FUNDAMENTAL TO VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOODS

Lincoln has held a Tree City U.S.A. designation for almost 5 decades and we are proud to proclaim our commitment to our thriving urban forest. Our forestry and parks staff are responsible for the City’s trees in public spaces that include parks, golf courses, trails, streets, and medians. Trees are living assets that increase the resiliency and sustainability of our community for generations to come. Forestry and parks staff preserve and grow our community forest by removing damaged or diseased trees, planting new native and diverse species, and maintaining all trees in our public spaces. Not only does our community forest showcase many shades of colors throughout the seasons, it also provides our City with social, environmental and economic benefits for all. Trees lower heating and air conditioning costs, prevent erosion, provide wildlife habitat, reduce storm water runoff, increase property values, and make our neighborhoods more livable.

Doing its part to maintain and preserve our priceless community forest, the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department’s Community Forestry Section is responsible for all city-owned trees. The Department is also responsible for the planting, pruning and removal of trees on public property, which includes trees in parks, in golf courses, and along our trails.

For service calls regarding public trees, call (402) 441-7847, OPT. 0 or go to UPLNK.lincoln.ne.gov.

LINCOLN LOVES OUR VOLUNTEERS!

Every Spring and Fall Lincoln plants hundreds of trees in our public spaces. If you are looking for a volunteer planting schedule and an opportunity to plant alongside fellow tree stewards, please call (402) 441-7847, OPT. 0.

If yes, contact Adam Klingenberg at aklingenberg@lincoln.ne.gov or (402) 441-8269 for information on City assistance.
