Our community has a current trend of increasing youth rates of obesity, vaping, and worsening rates of mental health and fitness levels. These are key risk factors that can lead to heart disease and diabetes. This CHIP priority will collaborate with youth-serving community partners to assess barriers to physical activity opportunities for youth and develop intervention strategies that will increase their access.

While walking is the foundational activity for Walk to Unlock Nebraska, students can do nearly any type of physical activity to count towards progress on the virtual trails. Integrate physical activity into your home, have a friendly competition with other families, use this in the classroom with provided GoNoodle videos, collaborate with the physical education teacher, log active recess time, collaborate with a before/after school fitness program, map out a jogging route around the school…you get the idea! Great Plains Trail Network: Trail-A-Thon 2024 Lincoln Trail-A-Thon 2024 : Lincoln Trail-A-Thon : Great Plains Trail Network (gptn.org) The Lincoln Trail-A-Thon is a challenge to ride, run, jog or walk all the trails within the Lincoln city limits in 2024. When you finish you will have covered just over 92 miles of trails. When you register you'll receive Lincoln Trail-A-Thon draw string bag. All participants who finish all 12 routes by 12/31/2024 will be entered into a drawing for a prize package worth $100+ (prize package to be announced later) . This fun challenge was started to inspire individuals to be healthier by getting outdoors to enjoy the amazing trails system in Lincoln. But even more, it is to GIVE back, EXPLORE new trails and CONQUER a common goal.

UNL Husker Kids - UNL Husker Kids introduces children to a variety of sports, building basic motor skills, your child’s confidence, and their self-esteem.
Youth Sports Programs - YMCA and financial assistance: Financial Assistance | YMCA of Lincoln, NE (ymcalincoln.org) - YMCA provides a variety of youth programs and social connections. Families may apply for financial assistance.
Nebraska Game and Parks: Outdoor Nebraska - Events List | Outdoor Nebraska Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Calendar Offering several affordable youth and family events that get kids up and moving. Check out the calendar of events link above to learn more.
Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department - The department organizes affordable youth programs, sports leagues, and events. You can also find local parks and trails to play at and explore.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Lancaster County - This organization offers affordable after-school programs, sports, and recreational activities for youth.
Lincoln City Libraries - Host free and low-cost youth activities beyond reading programs, such as Mindful Movements, Wee Workouts, and Music and Movement times. They now offer sensory times.
Lincoln Children's Museum - They now offer sensory times, offer reduced admission costs after 4:00 PM, and participate in Museums for All where your family will receive reduced admission if you show your valid form of identification with your Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.
The Game Plan – Youth Sports Coaches Training, was developed by Omaha Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in collaboration with the Safe Kids Lincoln-Lancaster County Sports Injury Prevention Task Force. The 30-minute online training covers a wide range of topics related to sports injuries and how to prevent them or minimize their impact.
